Providing Sustainable Roofing Solutions for Home and Business Owners
Sustainable roofing refers to a wide range of considerations that can affect energy efficiency, manufacturing and transportation efficiency, operating costs, life-cycle endurance, and recycling of waste.
While Commonwealth Roofing has experience and can help with innovative sustainable building efforts like installation of solar collectors and vegetative roof systems, the most common way we can assist a building’s sustainability is by increasing its energy efficiency by upgrading roof insulation and installing heat-reflective roofing materials. Raising the R-value of roof insulation with additional and more efficient roof insulation conserves energy in both summer and winter, and a white “Cool-Roof” membrane of PVC or TPO can yield significant savings in cooling costs and make non-airconditioned spaces more comfortable in summer.
“I got a new roof from the Commonwealth team. We went with the barkwood color. I literally couldn’t be happier with how awesome my new roof looks. Huge shout out to the new construction team and their crew. They kept me informed on every little step, which was incredibly fast by the way. My roof was inspected on a Thursday and completely and perfectly installed the very next Wednesday by an outstanding crew. They worked hard through the day and had the job done swiftly. Also very nice guys and easy to talk to. I would highly recommend Commonwealth Roofing. Thanks a million again!”

As one of Kentucky’s first KRCA-certified roofing contractors, Commonwealth Roofing offers a variety of sustainable roofing products and systems to provide quality, efficient roofs that meet Energy Star certification requirements.
CRC makes it a priority to ensure our local KRCA certification is always active, performing roofing services that support the latest roofing technology and best practices.
The most affordable way to benefit from a sustainable roofing system is to simply switch from a black roof membrane to a cool-white heat-reflective system, such as our most popular white PVC roof manufactured by Duro-Last®. Switching from a dark asphalt or rubber roof to a white roof is the simplest way to increase energy efficiency. A “cool” heat-reflective white membrane can cut air-conditioning costs substantially, and the best news is that white roofs usually cost no more than black roofs.
A “green” roof, or live roof, is a roof made up of living plants and vegetation. In other words, it’s a roof that is partially or completely covered with plants that are rooted in soil and planted over a waterproofing membrane.
Living roofs serve several purposes for commercial buildings, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect. They not only provide a proven return on investment for building owners, but they also represent opportunities for significant social, economic, and environmental benefits, particularly in cities.
Green roofs are a new concept for Kentucky and the surrounding areas, but Commonwealth can help you decide if a live roof is right for you. Learn more about our live roofing experience by reading our case study.
